Non-Linear PowerPoints

Topics Learning Activities

    Some Examples:
    • Continents (Interactive Tutorial) — This PowerPoint was designed by students as a review and quiz for learning to identify the continents. Students get immediate feedback as they test their visual identification of the continents. Action buttons have been assigned to each of the continents and each answer on the quiz. Look at the settings.
    • Riddles (Interactive Games) — In this word game, students click on the riddle to see the correct answers.
    • Pyramids (Interactive Menu) — This is a one-slide PowerPoint presentation used as a center activity for the classroom. A Web site URL has been assigned to each category on the slide. This menu directs students to pre-selected and approved sites on the web. The view from the top of Khufu’s pyramid is a 360 degree QuickTimeVR tour. Use your mouse to spin around and look at the surrounding images.

HELPFUL TIP! NON-LINEAR POWERPOINTS

Unless you lock your slides, users can move in a linear fashion through your non-linear PowerPoint. Does this make sense? Let me explain…You want users to click on buttons; you do not want them to click elsewhere and move through the slide show in a linear fashion. If they mouse click anywhere on the slide, it will move to the next slide. They could go through your show and never know that you have buttons in it when your intent was to have them click buttons. Or this might give them an incorrect answer to their response. To prevent this from happening, go to SLIDE SHOW on the menu bar, then SLIDE TRANSITION, then to ADVANCE SLIDE. Be sure to UNCHECK “on mouse click” and UNCHECK on “automatically after”…..this will limit movement in your show to only the ACTION BUTTONS and SETTINGS you have established for slide progression.

HELPFUL TIP! BUILDING A FILAMENTALITY

When I begin a Hotlist, I go to my favorite search tool, GOOGLE, and search for good websites on the chosen subject. For this one, I was looking for information for my NCAA Basketball Project. I copy the URLs and a brief description in a word processing document, THEN I go to Filamentality and create the Hotlist. It works much better FOR ME if I have all the URLs gathered before I begin then I can just copy and paste into the Filamentality. Here are the ones I choose for my Hotlist. And here is what the final Hotlist looks like…
